This has been my major problem over the years. I say to myself “Faith you will read this book today”, but i will probably read it in the next two weeks or never. This menace has eaten deep, that i end up doing assignments the night before, or the morning of submission after weeks or months, in which the assignments were given. Something terrible happened to me(i will share the story someday) and i had to take a drastic step to stop procrastination.
Procrastination is the act of delaying or postponing an activity or action. It is a deficiency of self control. It is caused by a lot of reasons such as laziness, distractions, comparison with others (Rere has not done it, so i am not alone), lack of confidence etc. Procrastination has a lot of adverse effects such as decline in productivity, lack of achievement of set goals/targets, frustration, stress, panic, guilt and disappointing others.
The main aim of these writeup is to enlighten us on ways to we can prevent procrastination and they include:
>>Change your mindset: This is a personal race and no one can do this for you. Make a conscious effort, that whenever you find yourself procrastinating, you will say to yourself “not today dream killer, i will do it now”.
I can never overemphasize the importance of speaking to yourself..it really works. You should try it.
>>Visualize the type of future you want and what your inability to perform your current task will affect it. Nobody wants a dull future. If the lack of performance of that task will lead to a dull future, you have no option that to brace yourself up and do it.
>>Set to do lists and become more self aware.
>>Remove all forms of distractions that may hinder you from carrying out that activity.
>>Set deadlines for achievement of your goals.
>>Find out the exact reason why you procrastinate and try to work on it.
>>Forgive yourself from procrastinating in the past.
>>Give yourself gifts or a treat whenever you finish a task on time. This will serve as your motivation.
>>You can ask somebody to check up on you to ensure you accomplish your tasks. The next time you find yourself procrastinating, ask yourself this question.
NB: For some people, procrastination is more than a bad habit. It is a sign of a serious underlying health issue. For example ADHD(+) and OCD(+), anxiety and depression.
